I ended up cheating to see the alternate ending because I couldn't imagine playing through the game another two times, but I'd recommend to anyone playing this game on the PC to just unlock the Dead On Arrival difficulty via a registry setting, and play through the game the first time on the highest difficulty. Unfortunately, the Dead on Arrival level isn't unlocked until you clear Detective and then Hard Boiled, so you have to beat the game 3 times to see the alternate ending.
